Neighborhood

City Square ParkBack Bay is Boston’s premier residential neighborhood. It was once called “the most civilized square mile in America.” The construction of residences in this area began in 1860 at the Public Garden and moved west for the next two decades. Fashioned after the Champs Élysées in Paris, the grand promenade of Back Bay is Commonwealth Avenue where the prominent families of Boston society built their grand mansions to the designs of the outstanding architects of the late Victorian era. Shortly after World War II Winston Churchill declared Commonwealth to be “the grandest boulevard of North America”. Today most of these fine homes have become condominium residences, and the neighborhood is still a vibrant social, cultural and commercial area, as well as one of the city’s most desirable addresses. Residential Back Bay is framed by the Charles River Esplanade where walkers, joggers, sailors, bicyclists, and concertgoers form an active cityscape; Newbury Street where the upscale shops and restaurants attract an international mix of shoppers; the beautiful Christian Science Plaza and Symphony Hall which the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra call home; and Beacon Hill with its charming village atmosphere of the Charles Street shopping district – all in close proximity. The residents of Back Bay enjoy the best that Boston has to offer.
